Comment:
Taken from the MetS comment from B.subtilis (GenBank): MetS is probably essential for cell survival, being required not only for elongation of protein synthesis but also for the initiation of all mRNA translation through initiator tRNA(fMet) aminoacylation.

Activity:
ATP + L-Methinine + tRNA(Met) = AMP + Pyrophosphate + L-Methionyl-tRNA(Met).

A gapped BLAST reveals significant similarity to proteins described as methionyl-tRNA synthetase (methionine-tRNA ligase). For example: Residues 7-521 are 43% similar to residues 8-528 of SYM_BACSU. Other significant hits are against (but not limited to) the methionyl-tRNA synthetase proteins of B.stearothermophilus (SYM_BACST), M.genitalium (SYM_MYCGE) and M.pneumoniae (SYM_MYCPN). Other significant (but weaker similarity as compared to the methionyl-tRNA synthetase proteins), were hits to valyl and leucyl tRNA synthetase proteins from a variety of organisms.

A BLAST against the STDPRO database reveals significant similarity to a number of proteins found in the genomes of M.genitalium, C.trachomatis and T.pallidum. In all cases, these proteins are tRNA synthetase proteins. In M.genitalium the significant hits are against: MG021(metS), MG334(valS), MG266(leuS), MG345(ileS), MG253(cysS) and MG378(argS). In C.trachomatis the significant hits are against: CT032(metG), CT209(leuS), CT302(valS) and CT019(ileS). In T.pallidum the significant hits are against: TP0798(metG), TP1035(valS), TP0586(leuS) and TP0452(ileS).
