Comment:
This protein shows similarity to a number of other proteins that are grouped in a cbbY/cbbZ/gph/yieH family. Phosphoglycolate phosphate catalyzes the reaction:

2-phosphoglycolate + H20 = glyoolate + orthophosphate.

NOTE: Analysis by Pfam and Blocks shows that homology starts approximately around amino acid 21. In addition to this, similarity between proteins analyzed by PSI-BLAST showed that while the subject started at one of the first few amino acid residues, similarity for our query(UU115) always started between residues 19-23. Looking at the map of the chromosome, it is unlikely that gph overlaps with UU114 (folA). Rather, it would seem plausible that the actual start ATG is at amino acid residue #21, the third methionine.

Gapped BLAST revealed weak but significant similarity to the phosphoglycolate phosphatase proteins of T.pallidum (3322848), and A.aeolicus (2983753), where residues 27-212 are 24% similar to the gph of T.pallidum and residues 24-212 are 23% similiar to the gph of A.aeolicus.

Three iterations of PSI-BLAST revealed that UU115 has strong similarity to a number of phosphoglycolate phosphatase proteins found in a number of bacterial species. Significant hits were made against the phosphoglycolate phosphatase proteins of A.eutrophus-chromosomal (GPHC_ALCEU) and plasmid (GPHP_ALCEU), E.coli (GPH_ECOLI), H.influenzae (GPH_HAEIN), R.sphaeroides (1825472), B.burgdorferi (2688602) and Synechococcus sp. (974614).

Other hits were made against gph homologs, or proteins that showed similarity to the cbbY/cbbZ/gph/yieH family.
