From GenBANK (gi:118244): This enzyme catalyzes the reaction: n-succinyl-ll-2,6-diaminoheptanedioate + H2O = succinate + ll-2,6-diaminoheptanedioate, requiring a cofactor, cobalt or zinc. This is involved in the fifth step in the biosynthesis of diaminopimelate and lysine from aspartate semialdehyde. dapE/msgB is a multicopy suppressor of a temperature-sensitive allele of the heat shock gene grpE. It belongs to peptidase family m20b; also known as the arge/dape/acy1/cpg2/yscs family.
