Comment:
From GenBANK (gi:2506169): Leu1 catalyzes condensation of acetyl-CoA and 2-oxoisovalerate to form 2-isopropylmalate synthase by the reaction: 3-carboxy-3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoate + CoA = acetyl-CoA + 3-methyl-2-oxobutanoate + H2O. This is the first step in leucine biosynthesis. This homotetramer belongs to the alpha-IPM synthetase / homocitrate synthase family.
