From GenBANK (gi:585010): This protein catalyses the reaction from prephytoene diphosphate to phytoene: 2 geranylgeranyl diphosphate = pyrophosphate + prephytoene diphosphate, and also: prephytoene diphosphate = pyrophosphate + phytoene. This is involved in carotenoid biosynthesis. Phytoene synthase belongs to the phytoene/squalene synthetase family.
