From GenBANK (gi:131626): This catalytic subunit can alone transform AIR to CAIR, but in association with PurK, which possesses an ATPase activity, an enzyme complex is produced which is capable of converting AIR to CAIR efficiently under physiological condition. The subunit catalyzes the reaction: 1-(5-phosphoribosyl)-5-amino-4-imidazole-carboxylate = 1-(5-phosphoribosyl)-5-aminoimidazole + CO(2), the sixth step in de novo purine biosynthesis.
