From GenBANK (gi:1708803): The catalytic activity of this protein is: 3-carboxy-2-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoate + NAD(+) = 3-carboxy-4-methyl-2-oxopentanoate + NADH (the product decarboxylates to 4-methyl-2-oxopentanoate). This reaction is the third step in leucine biosynthesis. Belongs to the isocitrate and isopropylmalate dehydrogenases family.
