From GenBANK (gi:13431514): This enzyme may play a significant role in processes leading to recovery from mutagenesis and/or cell death by alkylating agents. Its action is the hydrolysis of the
deoxyribose n-glycosidic bond to excise 2,6-diamino-4-hydroxy- 5n-methylformamidopyrimidine (FAPY) or 4,6-diamino-5- formamidopyrimidine. Requiring a cofactor, it binds one zinc ion per molecule, and it belongs to the fpg family.

From Medline (93232071): The Fpg protein of Escherichia coli is a DNA repair enzyme with DNA glycosylase, abasic site nicking, and deoxyribose excising activities. Analysis of the amino acid sequence of this protein suggests that the Fpg protein is a zinc finger protein. The Fpg protein binds an oligonucleotide with a unique chemically reduced abasic site in a defined sequence.
