Comment:
This is a component of the phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent sugar phosphotransferase system (PTS), a major carbohydrate active-transport system. Enzyme I transfers the phosphoryl group from phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to the phosphoryl carrier protein (HPr). Enzyme I is common to all PTS.

There is a 3D structure of the E. coli protein.

1-572 are 71% similar to PT1_MYCPN, PEP-dependent HPr protein kinase
phosphoryltransferase of Mycoplasma pneumoniae,(AE000021). Residues
1-566 are 44% similar to PT1_BACSU, phosphotransferase system enzyme
I of Bacillus subtilis,(M98359). In addition residues 179-542 are 24% similar to TP0746, pyruvate
orthophosphate dikinase of T. pallidum and residues 4-561 are 27%
similar to CT336, PEP protein phosphotransferase of C. trachomatis.
