Ribulose-phosphate 3-epimerase (EC 5.1.3.1) (also known as pentose-5-phosphate
3-epimerase or PPE) is the enzyme that converts D-ribulose 5-phosphate into
D-xylulose 5-phosphate in Calvin's reductive pentose phosphate cycle. In
Alcaligenes eutrophus two copies of the gene coding for PPE are known [1],
one is chromosomally encoded (cbbEC), the other one is on a plasmid (cbbeP).
PPE has been found in a wide range of bacteria, archebacteria, fungi and
plants.

3 epimerase proteins. For example residues 1-208 are 64% similar to
Y112_MYCPN, D-ribulose-5-phosphate 3 epimerase of Mycoplasma pneumoniae,
(AE000057).
In addition, residues 28-202 are 32% similar to residues 29-210 of
RPE_ECOLI, D-ribulose-5-phosphate 3 epimerase of E. coli,(AE000414).
Residues 7-194 are 29% similar to residues 5-202 of TP0945,
ribulose-phosphate 3-epimerase of T. pallidum. Residues 1-196 are
27% similar to residues 13-212 of CT121, ribulose-phosphate 3-epimerase
of C. trachomatis.
