Comment:
In E. coli and S. typhimurium, two ORFs have been identified (ORF1 and ORF2). In these two microorganisms, prs appears to be transcribed from two promoters. The first promoter P1 is located upstream of ORF1, resulting in expression of the prs gene through a tricistronic operon. The second promoter P2 is located in ORF2 and appears to only transcribe prs (Post DA, Hove-Jensen B, Switzer RL. 1993. J Gen Microbiol 139 (Pt 2):259-66. Medline: 7679718). prs has also been implicated in the initiation of DNA replication through a mutant called dnaR (Sakakibara Y. 1992. J Mol Biol 226(4):989-96. Medline: 1325564; Sakakibara Y. 1993. J Bacteriol 175(17):5559-65. Medline: 8396119).
