Comment:
Biotin synthase catalyses the last step of the biosynthesis of biotin in microorganisms and plants. The active protein isolated from Bacillus sphaericus and Escherichia coli contains an iron-sulphur (FeS) cluster (see Bui et al., FEBS Letters 440 (1-2): 226-230, 1998).

Biotin is an essential vitamin for microorganisms. It is a carrier of activated CO2 and hence plays critical roles in carboxylase-catalyzed reactions and hence plays a crucial role in gluconeogenesis and in maintaining the level of citric acid cycle intermediates (see "[2FE-2S] TO [4FE-4S] CLUSTER CONVERSION IN ESCHERICHIA-COLI BIOTIN
