Comment:
This protein appears to have the properties of a
fusion protein. The N-terminus shares similiarity
with the alpha subunit and the C-terminus shares
similiarity with the beta subunit. No examples of
a fusion between subunits in different organisms
were found in a limited search.

This enzyme in B. subtilis is responsible for the catalytic conversion of alpha-keto acids to acyl-CoA and CO2. The pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 component, made up of an alpha and a beta chain, is an alpha-keto acid decarboxylase.
