Comment:
In E.coli, this enzyme is induced by heat shock, when it is required for degradation of damaged proteins.

In E. coli, htrA is transcribed from a sigma-E promoter. HtrA is a periplasmic endoprotease which is indispensable at high temperatures and which may function to degrade transiently degraded substrates in periplasm. See also degQ.
Serine proteases belongs to peptidase family S2C; also known as the HtrA/HhoA/HhoB family.

CT823 is orthologously related to CPn0979: residues 2-497 of CT823 are 73% similar to residues 6-488 of CPn0979, a predicted periplasmic serine protease from C. pneumoniae. This protein is similar to PG535, a predicted periplasmic serine protease from Porphyromonas gingivalis.
