Comment:
In addition to its replicative activities, the pol III enzyme may have
3' to 5' exonuclease activity. The alpha chain has the polymerizing activity,
while the epsilon chain has the exonucleolytic activity. It would seem
from their lengths that both CT261 and CT536 may be alpha chains, though CT261
has the better score to defined epsilon sequences. See CT187 for gamma/tau
subunits and CT075 for the beta chain sequence.

Both CT261 and CT405 are similar to residues 411-618 approximately of MG031, thus not nearly so
long; these are most similar to polIII alpha sequences from gram-positive bacteria (see
Koonin and Bork, TIBS21:128, 1996). The CT alpha or epsilon, then, may not embody an exonucleolytic domain,
which in MG031 is found in the N-terminus.

Numerous hits in gapped BLAST to DNA polymerase III alpha sequences, e.g.,
residues 2-194 are 31% similar to the enzyme from S. aureus and residues
4-211 are 26% similar to the enzyme from M. genitalium, DP31_MYCGE. CT536
is similar to TP0643, a predicted epsilon chain sequence in T.pallidum.
It is also similar to MG031 in M.genitalium: residues 4-211 are similar to residues
411-618 of MG031.

CT546 is orthologously related to CPn0655 and
they share 73% similarity.
