Comment:
This protein appears to have the properties of a fusion protein. The N-terminus shares similiarity with the alpha subunit and the C-terminus shares similiarity with the beta subunit. No examples of a fusion between subunits in different organisms were found in a limited search.

This enzyme in B. subtilis is responsible for the catalytic conversion of alpha-keto acids to acyl-CoA and CO2. The pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 component, made up of an alpha and a beta chain, is an alpha-keto acid decarboxylase.

The N-terminal residues of CT340 are similiar to CT245 The C-terminal residues of CT340 are similar to CT246. Both the C-terminus of CT340 and CT246 (the beta subunit) are highly similar to the lipoamide protein of the African clawed frog. CT246 is found as a member of a three gene operon which has the potential to to encode E1 alpha and beta, and E2 of pyruvate dehydrogenase.

Notice overlap in hits to Pfam families. This is rare.

37% similar to the enzyme from an African clawed frog (U39669). CT340 is similar to
MG273, a predicted pyruvate dehydrogenase beta subunit sequence from
M.genitalium. No similarity to T.pallidum.

CT340 is orthologously related to CPn0033:
residues 7-678 are 75% similar to that of CPn0033.
