Comment:
In addition to its replicative function in DNA synthesis, this enzyme possesses 3' to 5' exonuclease activity. The tau chain assists in the dimerization of the core complex. The gamma chain is an auxillary to the core subunits. In E.coli, the gamma subunit is encoded by the first 80% of the tau subunit gene, then a frameshifting event leads to premature termination (Lehninger, p.823).
