Comment:
This protein is identical to GenBank accession AAC67610 (genome position AE001277). SPase I is evolutionary related to the yeast mitochondrial inner membrane protease subunit 1 and 2 (genes IMP1 and IMP2) which catalyze the removal of signal peptides required for the targeting of proteins from the mitochondrial matrix, across the inner membrane, into the inter-membrane space. In Escherichia coli the signal peptidase is a membrane-bound endopeptidase with two amino-terminal transmembrane segments and a periplasmically-located carboxy-terminal catalytic region. By cleaving off their signal peptides, this enzyme functions to release proteins that have been translocated into the inner membrane from the cell interior. See CT064 and CPn0110.

Residues 12-187 are 23% similar to the enzyme from Arabidopsis (U93215). CT020 is weakly similar to TP0926 of T.pallidum, a predicted signal peptidase I. CT020 is also similar to prokaryotic type I signal peptidase SipF from Bradyrhizobium japonicum (AF065159), a signal peptidase I from Salmonella typhimurium (P23697) and a signal peptidase I from E. coli (P00803). No similarity to M. genitalium.
